Privacy Policy for Coati Hiking Diary
Last Updated: 27 December 2025
This Privacy Policy applies to the Coati Hiking Diary mobile application, developed by SaguaroBytes LLC.
Our Philosophy
Our philosophy is simple: We firmly believe your data is yours, and only yours.
In a world where most apps harvest user data for profit, SaguaroBytes LLC takes a different path. We built Hiking Diary to help you track your adventures, not to track you.
1. Where Your Data Lives
Most apps store your data on their own servers. Coati Hiking Diary is different.
- On Your Device: All your hiking logs, photos, statistics, and routes are stored locally on your iPhone.
- In Your iCloud: If you have iCloud enabled, your data allows for synchronization across your devices. This happens via your private Apple iCloud account.
- No External Storage: The Hiking Diary app does not store user information on an external database.
2. How We Use App Permissions
To make Hiking Diary work, we need access to certain sensors on your phone. We only ask for permissions that are absolutely necessary for the app’s core features.
š Location Services
We use location services to draw your route on the map and calculate your statistics.
- When in Use: We use this to track your hike, calculate distance, and monitor your pace while the app is active and visible on your screen.
- Always: We ask for “Always” permission so the app can continue recording your hike, distance, and elevation data when you lock your screen or use other apps. We do not track your location when you are not actively recording a hike.
š Motion & Fitness
We use your deviceās motion sensors (like the pedometer and barometer).
- Purpose: Motion data is used to calculate elevation gain and track your steps accurately. This helps us tell you how high you climbed, not just how far you walked.
š· Camera
- Purpose: We request camera access solely to let you take photos of your hike directly within the app. These photos are stored privately within the app’s data on your device and in your private iCloud account.
3. Analytics and Third-Party Tracking
We do not use them.
4. Feedback & Support
If you choose to use the “Feedback” feature within the app, it will open the default email client on your iPhone (like the Mail app).
- What you share: By sending us an email, you naturally share your email address and the contents of your message with us.
- How we use it: We use this information solely to respond to your feedback, answer your questions, or resolve support issues. We do not add your email address to any marketing lists or share it with third parties.
5. Your Data, Your Control
Because the data is stored on your device, you have total control over it.
- Exporting: You can export your data (often as GPX files) directly from the app to share with friends or other services.
- Deleting: If you delete a hike in the app, it is gone. If you delete the app, all local data is removed. (Note: Please manage your iCloud backups if you wish to remove historical data completely).
6. Childrenās Privacy
We do not knowingly collect data from children. In fact, we don’t knowingly collect data from anyone. Because our app does not require account registration or collect personal data on our servers, it is safe for users of all ages.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy occasionally as we add new features. If we make significant changes that affect your privacy, we will notify you through the App Store release notes.
8. Contact Us
If you have any questions about this privacy policy or how Hiking Diary works, please contact us. Since we donāt have your data, we canāt help you recover lost passwords (you don’t have a password with us!) or delete account data, but we are happy to answer questions about the app!
